Sunday, Septuagesima

Towards the end of the morning, the "Prise du Drapeau" ceremony is held in the Piazza di Città.

The General's staff dressed as light cavalrymen in Napoleon's army now make their appearance for the first time in the company of the General. In the afternoon, the General and his staff accompanied by the pipers and drummers perform the first "Alzata degli Abbà".

The "abbots" were once a sort of lay priors who took part in the festivities and carnivals in each district. When the single carnival was created in 1808, they were replaced by two children from each of Ivrea's five parishes.

This Sunday's ceremony takes place at these children's homes, where they are lifted up on a balcony and displayed to the cheering crowd.

Dressed in 14th-century costumes and riding on horses led by dismounted squires, these children subsequently take part in all the parades. Their last act is to set fire to the scarli (decorated poles) on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras).
